Serving After Sunset: The After Hours Ministry
THE BIRTH OF AFTER HOURS
After Hours Ministry was founded in 2007 by two individuals who had left a world marked by addiction, exploitation, and deep brokenness. Later, a heartfelt mission began and drove them to create a community anchored in the hope of Christ with the aim to extend that hope to those in Los Angeles grappling with the cycle of sexual exploitation. The founders felt a calling to support those trapped in a lifestyle of sexual bondage, drug addiction, gang involvement, and more, by sharing the message of liberation and healing found in Jesus Christ.
THE CALLING
Tracy Speers began serving with Treasures LA, a ministry dedicated to reaching women in the sex industry by visiting strip clubs and offering hope. Through this work, she learned about After Hours, a ministry focused on street outreach to women being exploited through prostitution. Her heart was deeply burdened for the women being trafficked—those forced to remain on the streets night after night, unable to return home until they met the demands of their trafficker.
In 2022, during the Super Bowl hosted in Los Angeles, Pastor Darryl Speers and his wife Tracy felt a clear calling to serve with After Hours Ministry.
Major sporting events, such as the Super Bowl, unfortunately coincide with a significant increase in human trafficking activity, as traffickers bring vulnerable women and children into host cities from across the nation. That year, they joined a coalition of nonprofit organizations working together to combat this crisis. It was through this collaborative outreach that their partnership with After Hours Ministry began. By God’s grace, 14 children who were being trafficked for sex were rescued during that effort.
Following the COVID-19 pandemic, Tracy became the president and executive director of After Hours Ministry, inheriting it during a time of significant decline. The ministry had dwindled to just one remaining volunteer—herself. She established a new board of directors and, through prayerful leadership and dedication, the team grew to over 20 active volunteers. To further equip herself for the role, Tracy earned a certificate in Anti-Human Trafficking from the Global Center for Women and Justice, ensuring she had the training and knowledge needed to lead the ministry effectively.
BIBLICAL INSPIRATION
A key passage that inspires the work at After Hours comes from Luke 4:18, where Jesus proclaims,
“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to proclaim good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to set the oppressed free.”
This scripture perfectly encapsulates the essence of the ministry, as they strive to assist individuals who have faced oppression and exploitation, guiding them toward recovery and true freedom.
PARTNERING FOR HOPE
A significant boost to the mission of After Hours Ministry came when The Baptist Foundation of California partnered with them to help purchase a mobile unit. This invaluable resource enables Pastor Darryl and Tracy to bring essential healthcare services directly to those in need—reaching individuals who might otherwise go without medical attention. The mobile unit extends their outreach, allowing them to offer not only spiritual support but also practical, life-sustaining care.
This partnership has been a tremendous blessing, strengthening their capacity to serve and deepening their commitment to bring hope, healing, and the love of Christ to the most vulnerable. Through After Hours Ministry, they continue to give back—serving as vessels of God’s love, grace, and truth.
